Faculty Position - Pediatric Translational Behavioral Neuroscience Research The Center for Behavioral and Mental Health at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Children’s Center for Neurosciences Research at Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta are jointly seeking a faculty member to advance a translational discovery agenda. Candidates must conduct research that is relevant to improving the care of infants and children who are at elevated risk for the development of neuropsychiatric disorders (on the basis of genetic, environmental or combined causal influences).  Physician-scientists are encouraged to apply, and an MD and/or PhD is required.   We seek candidates with research vision who can develop and lead a translational research agenda that studies behavior and mental health using approaches grounded in neuroscience. Ideal candidates will have technological experience in neuroscience and be prepared to harness these technologies to advance knowledge of causal mechanisms in brain and behavioral development and to define potential targets for higher-impact therapies for neuropsychiatric disorders of childhood. Areas of particular interest include in-depth studies of causation, tracing genetic, epigenetic, and/or environmental variation to the developmental processes that govern brain and behavioral maturation. We encourage approaches that involve translatable model systems or innovative clinical trials and that capitalize on strategic collections of biomaterials, brain imaging or behavioral data from developing children. The candidate is expected to develop an innovative, externally funded research program that leverages both the clinical infrastructure of the Center for Behavioral and Mental Health and the collaborative community of scientists and technicians within the Children’s Center for Neurosciences Research. Scientific agendas focused on parsimonious developmental mediators of psychiatric conditions are of great interest, including mood dysregulation, the p factor, autism-related variation in reciprocal social behavior, callous-unemotional traits, risk profiles indexed by early childhood temperament, or brain/behavioral sequalae of early emotional trauma.  This position entails access to clinical electronic health record data from a large, evolving learning health system for child mental health, designed to model timely delivery of the complete continuum of evidence-based care to a representative population of infants, children, and adolescents, over 65% of whom are governmentally insured.   Primary faculty appointment will be in Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences with a joint or secondary appointment in the Division of Behavioral and Mental Health within the Department of Pediatrics. We offer a highly interactive collegial research environment with state-of-the-art facilities, as well as proximity to and collaborations with the world renown Marcus Autism Center, the Emory National Primate Research Center, and the Grady Trauma Project. Please visit our websites for more information about the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, the Department of Pediatrics, or Pediatric Research.   Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University have worked together since 1956, facilitating leading-edge pediatric research, training, and innovation. Together, our partnership advances research and facilitates evidence-based quality care for children. The Emory Department of Pediatrics has been ranked in the top 5 pediatric departments in National Institutes of Health research funding since 2016 and was ranked #1 in 2020 and 2022.   This job opportunity is part of our ambitious $200M investment to substantially grow our team of world-class child health researchers. Click here to learn more about our plan to recruit 30 new researchers over five years or contact peds.research@emory.edu with inquiries and for more information.   Interested applicants should apply online and upload their CV and a letter of interest highlighting their research.

Faculty Position – Child Mental Health Services Research   The Center for Behavioral and Mental Health at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is seeking a faculty member at the Assistant, Associate, or Professor level to superimpose a program of discovery upon an evolving learning health system for child mental health.  The candidate would join an engaged group of clinicians, public health experts and informaticists to leverage risk, intervention, and outcomes data generated by the clinical activity rendered to a large prospective longitudinal cohort of children served by our Center.  Scientists with backgrounds in the fields of epidemiology, implementation science, public health, health services utilization, and clinical trials are appropriate for consideration of this position.  Physician-scientists are encouraged to apply, and an MD and/or PhD is required.   Long-term support for the Center’s clinical activity and informatics infrastructure have been established by a major endowment to subsidize clinical revenue losses for the delivery of state-of-the-art mental health care to a population-representative sample on the order of 10,000 unique child psychiatric outpatients each year. The utilization of the resource has been strategized such that prospective patients are drawn from specific clinico-epidemiologic populations (representing the developmental continuum of risk for severe, life-course-persistent mental health impairment) and naturally comprise a quasi-randomized intervention cohort reflecting the impact of system transformation for the clinical mental health care of children, involving a racial- and ethnically-representative population of children, greater than 65% of whom are governmentally insured. The candidate is expected to develop an innovative, externally funded research program and to engage in both program evaluation and multidisciplinary research.  Early career investigators may elect to focus on specific sub populations, whereas senior scientists applying for this position would be expected to leverage the opportunity to establish a scientific program for monitoring a nationally significant model of system transformation in child mental health.   Primary faculty appointment will be in Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences with a joint or secondary appointment in the Division of Behavioral and Mental Health within the Department of Pediatrics. We offer a highly interactive collegial research environment with state-of-the-art facilities, as well as proximity to and collaborations with the Children’s Center for Neurosciences Research, the Rollins School of Public Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Grady Trauma Project, the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, and the Georgia Division of Family and Children’s Services. Marcus Autism Center, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and Emory University School of Medicine are conducting a search for an outstanding psychologist with specialization in pediatric psychology to provide clinical care and support in the Severe Behavior Program.  Specifically, we are seeking a psychologist who will join our team of psychologists and BCBA-Ds in the Severe Behavior Program serving children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder or a related developmental disability. We are seeking applicants who will work in both the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and Outpatient Programs (OP).  IOP provides behavioral intervention to children who engage in severe challenging behavior. Children seen in IOP attend 5-days/week, 5 hours/day for an average of 16 weeks. Each child is staffed at a 3:1 ratio, allowing for a high level of precision in the behavioral assessments and treatments conducted. The program also emphasizes caregiver training and development of socially valid interventions. A range of outpatient programs provide care to children who engage in mild to moderate challenging behavior. OP see patients once a week and focuses on caregiver training. Most OP services are provided for 12 weeks, but can be longer or shorter depending on how the child responds to treatment.  We are looking for individuals who are interested in providing a high level of clinical care and who are interested in contributing to innovative assessment, treatment, and research activities.   The psychologist will join a multidisciplinary treatment team that includes professionals from nursing, psychiatry and care coordination. Intervention focuses on the use of applied behavior analysis for the assessment and treatment of severe behavior problems. This position will support a clinical caseload that includes case management for patients in IOP, conducting evaluations, providing direct services through our outpatient clinics and supervision of psychology trainees. There will also be opportunities for independent and/or collaborative research – contributing to a research team that has several ongoing clinical trials, epidemiological studies, and single-case design studies underway.   Successful candidates will be well-trained and should possess a PhD and be a Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral level (BCBA-D). Completion of an APA- or CPA-accredited doctoral program in psychology, completion of an APA-accredited internship, and completion of postdoctoral fellowship is preferred.
