Job Description: Emory’s Sports Performance And Research Center (SPARC) at Flowery Branch is seeking a candidate to fill a postdoctoral research fellow position in the area of machine learning and artificial intelligence of injury prevention and sports performance enhancement. The primary project for this position will be focused on the identification of key predictive factors of hamstring injury to support more targeted application of hamstring injury prevention and rehabilitation programs for safer return to sport in professional American football players. This position will bridge collaborations with Dr. Gregory Myer’s injury prevention and sport performance team (Emory SPARC) and Dr. Anant Madabhushi’s artificial intelligence and machine learning team (Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory and Departments of Radiology and Imaging Sciences, Biomedical Informatics (BMI), and Pathology). The joint position will be focused towards deploying machine learning and/or artificial intelligence, specifically DTI-based radiomics analyses and integrated 3D biomechanics, to train and optimize prediction models that identify athletes at risk for hamstring injury with enhanced sensitivity and specificity.   Emory SPARC houses a state-of-the-art biomechanics and neuroscience lab and offers unique opportunities to develop novel technology and pursue advanced scientific research. The facility includes a dedicated research MRI suite, state-of-the-art motion capture technologies, and a range of electrophysiology equipment. As a critical component of this research, the candidate will work with markerless motion capture and machine vision techniques, with direct applications in virtual reality sports simulation, biomechanical assessments, rehabilitation, and neuroimaging. During their fellowship, the candidate can expect to further develop their technical expertise and scientific skills and will be encouraged to disseminate their work to the broader scientific community. Candidates should be comfortable leading their own project, but also working as part of a larger research team. The position is a temporary appointment that will renew yearly depending on satisfactory performance and available funding. Appointments may not exceed 5 years.    Minimum Qualifications: A doctoral degree or equivalent in an appropriate field. Strong scientific writing ability and excellent communication skills. The ability to work effectively with colleagues on complex multi- disciplinary problems. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigators.   Preferred Experience: Expertise in machine learning applied to machine vision, human biomechanics and/or muscle MR imaging is strongly preferred. A firm understanding of good software development practice and organizational skills are encouraged. Reporting to the Executive Associate Dean (EAD) for Medical Education, the Senior Associate Dean for Education Transformation and Innovation will be charged with accelerating medical education for all of our degree programs and learners and advancing innovation and transformation within and across the medical education continuum. The incumbent will lead the development and execution of a multi-year transformation and innovation action plan designed to facilitate the implementation of the newly developed medical education strategic vision and framework.   The role requires a deep understanding of medical education curricula, methods of educational delivery and assessment, knowledge of educational technology resources and infrastructure, as well as transformation and organizational change management principles required to shape and lead key efforts. This role will serve as a trusted subject matter expert for the SOM and must have a proven ability to demonstrate highly effective collaboration and teambuilding/teamwork across a variety of consistencies.  One of the early areas of responsibility for this role will be launching the new functional structure that has been proposed for the Medical Education Office. Under the new proposed structure cross-cutting medical education functions will be centralized into four medical education cores: (1) Student Success, (2) Instructional Design and Educational Technology, (3) Innovation and Transformation, and (4) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.  The incumbent must also demonstrate proven experience in developing and executing educational programs within complex medical school settings inclusive of multiple health care delivery systems.   In conjunction with the Dean, the EAD for Medical Education, and others, this position will develop and direct key programming and infrastructure requirements for execution of the medical education strategic framework, including concepts of innovative and intentional design into the creation of interprofessional learning opportunities, simulation infrastructure, educational space considerations, technology design, design-thinking principles, creativity, and others. Our Sickle Cell Disease Program is an integral component of the largest pediatric non-malignant hematology program in the nation. Our Sickle Cell Disease Program: • Represents the largest comprehensive pediatric sickle cell disease (SCD) program in the country, providing comprehensive multi-disciplinary outpatient, emergency, and inpatient services for more than 2,000 children and adolescents at three locations in metropolitan Atlanta. • Features 17 faculty members, 5 of whom are primarily basic research-focused, and 8 Advanced Practice Providers • This position will be supported by a GRA Distinguished Investigator Research Endowment of $1M. In addition, 4 other members of the sickle cell program are supported by endowed Chairs. • Supports clinical investigators and clinic trials through the Aflac Clinical Research Office which provides regulatory and grants management services and includes a dedicated team of 7 SCD research coordinators who implement outpatient and inpatient studies on all three campuses. • Is a leader in the development of curative therapies for SCD in close partnership with our BMT and Gene Therapy Programs. To date we have cured more than 116 children with stem cell transplants and enrolled 7 subjects on national gene therapy trials for SCD. • Maintains a clinical database that contains SCD genotype, treatment, and clinical care utilization data on 3,940 unique patients with SCD seen from 2010-2020 providing a valuable resource for program management, quality improvement and health services and outcomes research • Is a leader in multi-center clinical trials in sickle cell disease. • Is the leader of the Atlanta Sickle Cell Disease Consortium—a citywide collaboration of physicians and researchers from Emory, Morehouse School of Medicine, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Georgia State University, advancing the treatment of sickle cell disease and developing curative therapies.   About the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center The successful candidate will join one of the strongest pediatric hematology/oncology programs in the country. • Our Center has 115 faculty and 35 Advance Practice Providers (APPs), conducting basic, translational, and clinical research in gene therapy, focusing on CAR T-cell therapies, hemoglobinopathies, and hemophilia. • More than 7,000 children with cancer and blood disorders are treated annually at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center • The Aflac pediatric hematology program is one of the largest in the country (including over 2,000 active patients with sickle cell disease, and 600 with bleeding or clotting disorders) • The Aflac blood and marrow transplantation program performed over 80 transplants last year and having performed over 100 transplants in sickle cell disease, is one of the leaders in curative therapies for hemoglobinopathies. • In 2021, we were ranked No. 6 in the nation by US News and World Report for Pediatric Cancer • In 2020, our faculty generated $21.5M in extramural funding including more than $12.3M from the NIH • Our pediatric oncology program cared for more than 500 new cancer cases last year and is the pediatric component of the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. • Our fellowship program accepts 6 fellows each year for intensive clinical and research training in pediatric hematology/oncology. We follow the revised curriculum of the American College of Radiology/Society of Breast Imaging. As imaging is the foundation for a multidisciplinary approach for breast care, the fellow will be integrated into the Emory Breast Health Care Team which includes breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, breast pathologists, and an array of nurse navigators, nurses, nurse practitioners, technologists, and support staff. For all involved, empathetic, evidence-based patient care and interaction are emphasized and practiced. Breast imaging fellows will actively participate in weekly multidisciplinary breast conferences at all hospitals where they rotate, interpret screenings and diagnostic mammograms including digital tomosynthesis, perform and interpret breast ultrasound exams and interpret breast MRIs. Breast Imaging fellows will attain proficiency in breast interventional procedures including all forms of pre-operative localization, ultrasound-guided biopsy, MRI-guided breast biopsy, stereotactic biopsy (prone and upright units), and abscess drainage. Digital mammography with tomosynthesis is used at all Emory Breast Imaging Centers. Other equipment include upright and prone stereotactic biopsy tables, DBT-guided biopsy, an array of vacuum-assisted and automated breast biopsy devices, and ultrasound with elastography capability. Radioactive seed and radiofrequency marker placement are being employed at the Emory Breast Imaging Centers. The breast fellowship also involves teaching medical students and residents. Research opportunities are available and encouraged and research time will be allocated to those with approved projects and demonstrable progress.
