The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (Children’s), Emory University School of Medicine (Emory) and Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) are partnering with the Georgia Research Alliance in a $16M expansion of Georgia’s Sickle Cell Disease Program. This expansion is supported by investments from the Georgia Research Alliance, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Emory University, and Morehouse School of Medicine. This initiative will focus on the development, testing, and implementation of new therapies in sickle cell disease and includes the addition of four faculty positions at the Emory and Morehouse Schools of Medicine. The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the Emory University Department of Pediatrics, and Morehouse School of Medicine invite qualified applicants to apply for the keystone position of this initiative as the Calvin Smyre/Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar.   We seek a national/international leader in basic science research applicable to curative therapies for sickle cell disease and other hematological disorders. Areas of opportunity include, but are not limited to: - Hematopoietic stem cell biology: Stem cell renewal and expansion, stem cell fitness, clonal hematopoiesis, induced pluripotent stem cells, epigenetic and transcriptional regulation of gene expression - Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: reduced toxicity conditioning, transplant immunology and immune modulation, mechanisms controlling engraftment and rejection - Therapeutic gene manipulation: gene addition, gene editing, fetal hemoglobin induction, novel vector design and delivery - Drug discovery and development: fetal hemoglobin induction, anti-sickling compounds, biologicals   This position offers a wealth of opportunities for research collaborations within Emory and Morehouse Schools of Medicine clinical and basic science departments, Grady Hospital, Winship Cancer Institute, Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health, Georgia Institute of Technology, Augusta University/Medical College of Georgia, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The successful candidate will have joint appointments in the Departments of Pediatrics at Emory and Morehouse Schools of Medicine.   Job Duties and Responsibilities   - Conduct state-of-the-art research applicable to curative therapies for sickle cell disease and other hematological disorders. - Partner with the Aflac Sickle Cell Disease Program Director and translational and clinical research leaders to integrate the research and clinical components of the Sickle Cell Disease Program of the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. - Provide academic leadership and professional mentorship for faculty, fellows, postdoctoral fellows, residents, and students focused on hematopoiesis, stem cell biology and sickle cell disease pathophysiology. - Lead the Atlanta Sickle Cell Disease Consortium of basic science researchers and expand and strengthen collaborations with investigators from other divisions and departments at Emory, Georgia Tech, Georgia State and Morehouse School of Medicine, with the goal of building a nationally pre-eminent sickle cell disease program. The Division of Pediatric Neurology, Department of Pediatrics, with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta) is looking for an Epilepsy Program Director to join our academic/clinical team at an Associate Professor/Professor level.   The successful candidate will be a key leader in our Epilepsy Center, overseeing our epilepsy and neurophysiology programs, with a keen eye for quality and future program growth as well as an interest in epilepsy clinical research. Epileptologists participate in the teaching of neurology residents and epilepsy fellows as well as staffing a 12 bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, Fast Access Neurology clinics and reading LTVM/EEG studies. Children’s Epilepsy Program has several epilepsy subspecialty clinical programs including ketogenic diet, genetic epilepsy, infantile spasms/epileptic encephalopathy, psychogenic non epileptic events (PNEE) and epilepsy surgery. The Pediatric Neurosciences Program at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is ranked 1st in the Southeast and one of the top 20 programs in the USA by USN&WR. It is one of the largest programs in the country, handling more than 2,400 pediatric neurological inpatient cases and performing over 1,400 neurosurgeries (including over 50 epilepsy surgeries) each year.   Candidates must be board certified or eligible in pediatric neurology and the subspecialty of Epilepsy and must demonstrate excellent qualifications in education and clinical care. The expectation will be for daily communication with the PI to discuss the results of experiments and plan the next steps of the projects. Based on experience in molecular biology, biochemistry and virology taking on projects relevant to these topics but will also learn new techniques to implement in all projects. The Emory + Children’s Pediatric Institute, in collaboration with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, is seeking one full-time Pediatric Neuropsychologist (1.0 FTE) in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Neurology. Our team is committed to providing high quality clinical care, building strong research collaborations, and offering varied training experiences. This neuropsychologist will primarily support our inpatient rehabilitation team on the Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (CIRU) at the Scottish Rite campus in addition to conducting outpatient evaluations to monitor recovery over time. Opportunities for providing consultative services in outpatient medical clinics is also possible. We currently have two Neuropsychologists and two Pediatric Psychologists devoted to our intensive rehab team.   Our Pediatric Neuropsychology Team The Department of Neuropsychology at Children’s is one of the largest in the Southeast region. Our team currently includes 12 neuropsychologists (8 whom are board certified), five pediatric psychologists (1 is board certified), four psychometrists, and an accredited training program. The Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (CIRU) is a CARF-accredited, 28-bed unit located on the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Scottish Rite campus that provides intensive inpatient neurorehabilitation to children and adolescents who have experienced an acquired brain injury and/or (new onset) medical diagnosis with neurological involvement. Common diagnoses include acquired injuries (e.g., TBI, spinal cord injury, anoxic brain injury, stroke, abusive head trauma [AHT]), new onset illness (e.g., meningitis/encephalitis, brain tumors), as well as various neurodevelopmental and chronic neurological conditions (e.g., cerebral palsy, spina bifida, intractable epilepsy).     In general, our group sees patients with complex medical and neurological histories throughout development (birth to age 20) in different settings (inpatient, outpatient, clinics) at different time points (acute, chronic) covering various subspecialties. We currently have two providers and one psychometrist offering bilingual (Spanish/English) services. Primary referral sources include Neurology, Neurosurgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), and Cardiology. Access to psychometry support is provided and opportunities for collaborative research with established investigators are available. Our group has an APPCN-accredited postdoctoral fellowship in Pediatric Neuropsychology and an APA-accredited internship. Providers are involved in the supervision of trainees, including doctoral level graduate students (externs), interns, and fellows.    Minimum Qualifications Requirements include a doctoral degree from an accredited (APA/CPA) training program and a formal postdoctoral fellowship in neuropsychology with an emphasis on pediatrics. Candidates should be license eligible in Georgia and hold (or be prepared to seek) board certification in Clinical Neuropsychology (ABPP/ABCN). Aflac is a member of the COG Pediatric Early Phase Clinical Trials Network (PEP-CTN), NANT, TACL, and PBTC. - The MIBG and Relapsed Neuroblastoma Program is the largest in the southeast and has treated ~100 patients with therapeutic MIBG since its inception in 2013. - Aflac is a leading contributor to the Children’s Oncology Group, having been #1 in therapeutic trial enrollments for the past 2 years and annually in the top 4. This position will devote the majority of effort to clinical responsibilities in the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.   Provide pediatric psychological services for the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center patients on the Bone Marrow Transplant and general consultation-liaison services, which would constitute 100% of your total effort. The breakdown of your 1.00 FTE will be: - The final distribution of time will be arranged in discussion with, but ultimately at the discretion of, the Aflac Psychology & Neuropsychology Program Leader. - Provide effective delivery of services consultation liaison and psychotherapy) appropriate to the patient's specific needs and severity level of disability or impairment. Integrate infection control and body substance precautions, patient safety, body mechanics, and knowledge of growth and development. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Department of Pediatrics at the Emory University School of Medicine seek candidates to join our group of 23-faculty members for several Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor non-tenured faculty appointment positions.   Expertise is required in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. Applicants must have an M.D. or equivalent degree. ABP certification or board eligibility in pediatric critical care medicine and the ability to obtain a Georgia license are required.   Rank, salary, and tenure status are commensurate with training and experience.   Teaching responsibilities include participation in formal didactic lectures and informal teaching of medical students, residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, and other health care professionals working in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Our CCM group supports an accredited fellowship program of 15 fellows/year. The faculty are supported by a rapidly growing APP group (currently at 14 APPs) and a significant commitment to their training and education is required. Attendance and participation in presentations, small groups, simulation sessions, and multidisciplinary conferences is expected.   Clinical responsibilities include clinical practice in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at our Atlanta Egleston campus with a 40-bed PICU and ~3,000 admissions/year. The Egleston campus will move to a new 446-licensed bed Arthur M. Blank Children’s Hospital with a 48-bed PICU in September 2024 and eventual expansion to a 60-bed PICU in the fall of 2029.   Academic responsibilities include investigator-initiated and collaborative research. The non-tenured faculty appointment involves a substantial commitment to research and the expansion of critical care outreach services within the healthcare system. Although a successful candidate will be called on to perform a combination of administrative, academic, and clinical activities, the exact proportions of these duties will depend on the applicant’s interests, experience, and expertise.   The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology is composed of 21 pediatric endocrinologists, 2 psychologist, 16 certified diabetes educators, 3 social workers, and a team of 32 administrative and nursing support personnel.
