Oxford College invites applications for two tenure-track positions in African American Arts and Culture. One position focuses on art history; the second focuses on music.
The successful candidate in art history would have a specialization in African American art and art history with varied emphases on art practices, theories, historiographies, and/or social movements. Teaching responsibilities will include three courses per semester consisting of introductory survey courses and advanced courses in area of specialization. We are looking for an innovative scholar who has the promise to cultivate collaborations with cultural institutions in the Atlanta Metro area including the High Museum of Art, Trevor Arnett Art Gallery at Clark Atlanta University, and the APEX museum, as well as with Emory University’s own Michael C. Carlos Museum.
The successful candidate in music would have an expertise in various African American music and performance traditions including jazz, blues, gospel or hip hop capable of offering a critical perspective on the Western canon combined with courses on global or regional musical streams in ways that benefit a culturally diverse student population. Teaching responsibilities will include a 3-2 teaching load in music history and theory, in addition to administering the Oxford music program, with the possibility of additional course reduction to lead one of our student performance groups. We are looking for an innovative musicologist/ ethnomusicologist interested in developing a curriculum catering to Music majors and minors as well as the aesthetic and intellectual formation of liberal arts education in general, and who intends to develop a research program that connects music with relevant interdisciplinary debates in the humanities and, possibly, the sciences.
Required – A PhD in Art History or related field or a Doctorate (Ph.D. or DMA) in Music or related disciplines, completed by May 2022.
Desirable - Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate a track record of excellence and innovation in teaching at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate will be committed to integrating their research into their courses and invested in creating a vital artistic and cultural community through academic courses and building programs for students within artistic and musical currents related to African American or African diasporic cultural practices.
