Terms of Reference for Post-Doctoral Fellow
The Biomarkers Reflecting Inflammation and Nutritional Determinants of Anemia (BRINDA) project (www.BRINDA-nutrition.org) is a multi-agency and multi-country collaboration formed in 2012 in an effort to improve micronutrient assessment and anemia characterization globally. BRINDA’s overall goal is to refine approaches to estimate the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies and thus improve the targeting, design and effectiveness of nutrition research and programs. Data from nutrition surveys that measured inflammation, hemoglobin, and micronutrient biomarkers, were pooled. To date, BRINDA includes 33 surveys representing approximately 38,000 preschool children (PSC), 29,000 school aged children (SAC), and 54,000 women of reproductive age (WRA) from all six WHO geographic regions.
Key successes to date include the following:
• Multi-country and intuition collaborative group with Steering Committee representation from CDC, NICHD, GAIN, IZiNCG, DHS Program/ICF, HarvestPlus, GroundWork, and Emory University
• Wide-scale dissemination, including 20 high impact peer-reviewed publications (including AJCN supplements), SPRING programmatic brief, and dissemination at global nutrition symposia (e.g., Micronutrient Forum, Experimental Biology, International Congress of Nutrition
• A BRINDA website with statistical tools and tutorials
BRINDA is broken down into working groups. Emory University serves as the secretariat and Chair of the steering committee.
Data management and analysis needs:
BRINDA is seeking a post-doctoral fellow to join the core working group and data management working group. Primary duties include:
• Adapt and implement existing BRINDA data management plan, including data selection, intake, conversion, cleaning, and harmonization
• Supervise data analysts who will perform primary data management activities, including harmonization and quality checks
• Develop statistical plan for priority research questions in coordination with BRINDA authors and statistician
• Review code and statistical analyses performed by BRINDA team members and consult with BRINDA statistician as needed
• Oversee hosting of BRINDA data for public use
• Lead research papers and other dissemination based on interest
• Consult and collaborate with the overall BRINDA team on overall project management, including research question prioritization, data analysis and interpretation, and dissemination.
- PhD in computer science, nutrition, epidemiology, biostatistics, informatics or related fields with strong quantitative components.
- Experience with survey data, including complex survey design
- Experience with (macro) automation coding and processes
- Experience with SAS and R preferred; knowledge of SPSS or Stata
- Lead data management working group (Co-Data manger chair)
- Develop relational database
- Lead 1st author publication and contribute to 3-4 additional BRINDA manuscripts
- Contribute to developing new research questions and conducting analyses
- Provide leadership and mentorship to students in data management group
JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
