The Attorney Fellow for Emory Law's Volunteer Clinic for Veterans (Emory VCV) has three key roles, all conducted in full coordination with the Emory VCV Director and Staff Attorney: (1) representation of clinic clients in legal matters, including VA disability benefits and DIC compensation (2) assisting the Staff Attorney with training and supervision of law student volunteers, and (3) coordinating with law firms, volunteer attorneys, and the federal government. The Attorney Fellow reports to the Clinic Director and the Assistant Dean for Public Service. This position is a one-year fellowship funded in part by the American College of Trial Lawyers Foundation and The J.W. & Ethel I. Woodruff Foundation, to begin as soon as possible. The fellowship may continue beyond one year contingent on job performance and obtaining additional funding.
The Attorney Fellow participates in several legal clinics offered by Emory VCV throughout the year (no fewer than six clinics) and represents veterans in litigation, administrative proceedings, and transactions. This representation includes formulating sophisticated litigation strategy; drafting legal documents; interacting with clients, co-counsel, experts, partners, and opposing counsel in a respectful and intelligent way; and appearing before courts, administrative bodies, and legislative bodies in a professional manner.
Training and Supervision:
The Attorney Fellow will work on matters with volunteer law students, so some of the Attorney's work includes training and supervising students in performing intake and handling client matters. Under the direction of the Staff Attorney, the Attorney Fellow will provide students with instruction, assignments, and written and oral feedback during all parts of client representation.
The Attorney Fellow will work closely with law firms, volunteer attorneys, and the Veterans Administration to handle client matters. The Attorney Fellow will also help the Clinic Paralegal track clients, cases, and outcomes in the case management system - CLIO.
