JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
A post-doctoral position is available in the Center for Data Science™ in the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing of Emory University. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in bioinformatics and keen interest in themes of the microbiome, metabolomics, and/or DNA methylation analysis with applications to areas such as infectious disease, pre-term birth, neurodevelopment, multiple chronic conditions, and neurodegenerative disease. The ideal candidate will be motivated to pursue computational analyses of metagenomic, metabolomic, and/or epigenomic data inspired by the biology of one or more of the above conditions in humans.
• PhD, MD, or other equivalent degree.
• Experience with such as R and/or Python. Experience with another scripting language is a plus.
• Ability to drive her/his own projects as well as to collaborate and contribute to the development of projects of other center members.
The Center for Data Science™ was established in 2015 as one arm of a multi-pronged strategy to propel the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing to recognition as one of the top 5 schools of nursing in the U.S. The Center is co-directed by Dr. Vicki Hertzberg, a reknowned biostatistician who is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, and Dr. Roy Simpson, an internationally recognized nurse informatician who is a member of the American College of Medical Informatics and Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Hertzberg is the principal investigator of a study exploring the relationship between the microbiome and the progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. She is also a principal investigator of a CDC/NIOSH-funded study to determine the interrelationships between the physiologic stress of occupational heat exposure, renal dysfunction, and metabolomics. Faculty and staff associated with the Center collaborate on studies of the microbiome in pre-term birth, the microbiome and neurodevelopment, and the microbiome and metabolomics of hypertension and other chronic conditions.
The Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing is one component of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center of Emory University, a vibrant biomedical research and academic community located in Atlanta, GA, and it is located across the street from the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The incumbent fellow will have access to Emory’s considerable strengths in biostatistics, bioinformatics, human genetics, neurology, and experimental biology.
