JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
A VA funded postdoc position is available immediately to study the molecular , mechanisms controlling sodium absorption by Na+/H+ exchange in the intestine (Am. J. Physiol 2018, 315:G433-G442; Am. J. Physiol 2016, 311:F343-343; JCI 2015, 125:3519-3531; JBC, 2014, 289:18360-18372; Mol. Biol. Cell, 2011, 22:3812-3825).
Our studies focuses on the regulation of Na+/H+ exchange in diabetic diarrhea where metformin inhibits NHE3 and contributes to metformin-associated diarrhea. In addition to the training in gastrointestinal physiology, the lab provides the opportunities to learn about G protein-couple receptors, epithelial cell survival and proliferation, and colorectal cancer. The study uses cultured cells, knockout mouse, intestinal stem cells, and other molecular and cellular biological tools. The qualified candidates should be able to design experiments, analyze data, and troubleshoot experiments. The candidate should have excellent oral and written communication skills, and will be expected to present research findings at conferences, and compose manuscripts. He/she should be able work effectively and collegially with colleagues, and is expected to interact closely with the supervisor through weekly one-to-one meetings and monthly group meetings.
He/she is expected to work at both Emory campus and Atlanta VA Medical Center. For postdoc, a doctoral degree or equivalent (PhD, MD, ScD, DVM, or MD/PhD) in the field of cell biology, molecular physiology, or signal transduction is required. Preference will be given to early stage (< 2 years) applicants.
