  • Description

    JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

    Postdoctoral Position in Pharmacology, Emory University, Atlanta, GA

    A Ph.D. level postdoctoral position with a focus on studying phenotypes and therapeutic efficacy of small molecules on Alzheimer’s disease models is available in the laboratory of Dr. Thota Ganesh and Dr. Ray Dingledine at the Department of Pharmacology, Emory University School of Medicine, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

    Responsibilities

    The successful candidate will play a key role in experimental design, data collection and analysis. He/she will collaboratively work with a multi-disciplinary team of neuroscientists and medicinal chemists to acquire biochemical and histochemical data from in vitro and in vivo animal models.

    The specific responsibilities of this position include:

    • Treating rodents with investigational drug candidates for weeks to months and study behavioral deficits, harvesting the blood and brain at the end point for analysis
    • Analysis of brain inflammation and neuropathology by ELISA, Western-blot, qRT-PCR, immuno-histochemistry to study amyloid plaques, soluble amyloids, gliosis and neurodegeneration

    Requirements

    • Ph.D. in molecular and neurobiology or neuropharmacology with 0-2 years of postdoctoral experience in above fields. Additional experience working with transgenic Alzheimer’s rodent models will be advantage
    • Familiarity with rodent brain/tissue harvesting, surgical procedures, brain sectioning; use of microscope, confocal, cryostat, and PCR machines
    • Knowledge on creation of Alzheimer’s transgenic animals, trouble shooting in genotyping.
    • Familiarity with immuno-histochemistry of gliotic markers, ELISA and Western blot techniques
    • Cell culture work, including creation of stable cell lines using vectors/constructs, and testing the novel compounds for potency evaluation.
    • Isolation of primary cells such as microglia and macrophages from mouse and rat. Characterization of phagocytosis markers in the cells microglia will be plus
    • Knowledge in statistical methods including probability and power analysis.
    • Ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary team environment.
    • Ability to discuss issues and developments with scientists with different backgrounds
    • Good communication skills
