    Reporting to the Head of Cataloging, the Cataloging and Metadata Librarian will be a key member of the Pitts Theology Library’s technical services team, contributing to the internal consistency and quality control of the data and metadata of the Library’s discovery systems and will support the discoverability and accessibility of the Library’s resources. The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian will work closely with the Acquisitions Specialist in overseeing the Library’s periodicals collection and with the Systems and Digital Scholarship Librarian in supporting the operation of the Library catalog and managing the Library’s growing digital collections. The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian may supervise student assistants.



    • Original and complex cataloging of monographs, periodicals, and electronic resources
    • Evaluating catalog data for resource discovery
    • Authority work on controlled headings and vocabularies
    • Managing non-MARC metadata of digital resources in Library repositories
    • Keeping current with issues and trends in cataloging and metadata management
    • Serving on library and campus committees as appropriate
    • Participating in relevant professional and scholarly associations



    • Master’s degree in library and information studies or equivalent experience
    • Working knowledge of integrated library systems and the structure of online catalogs
    • Experience with OCLC, MARC and LCSH
    • Familiarity with content standards (e.g. RDA, etc.) and metadata systems
    • Understanding of existing and emerging cataloging principles and metadata schemas
    • Good organizational, time-management, and analytical skills
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, within a collegial environment



    • Master’s degree in theology, religious studies, or related discipline
    • Experience conducting academic research
    • Knowledge of standard and emerging cataloging principles and metadata schemes
    • Experience with ExLibris’s Alma
    • Familiarity with maintenance and support of digital collections
    • Proficiency in a language other than English


    The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian will be hired at the rank “Librarian Specialist Assistant Rank” or “Librarian Specialist Associate Rank,” depending upon the candidate’s experience. Rank of Librarian Specialist is for professionals with appropriate service, professional development, and scholarly contributions. Generally responsible for a full range of library services to include subject specialty/curator, collection/digital archivist, expertise in preservation, research and reference, outreach and education, and technical services. Individual contributor to the collaborative work of the department and the library. Specialist may supervise students.
