    JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

    A Postdoctoral Fellowship position is available at Emory University and the Yerkes National Primate Research Center in the Division of Microbiology and Immunology. The successful candidate will work on a project involves studying Immunologic changes associated with progestin-based contraceptives characterizing immune profiles and identifying factors that may alter HIV risk. Hormonal contraception may modify innate and adaptive immune cells and their functions to influence HIV-1 susceptibility in mucosal microenvironment. The project work involves the basic approach of flow cytometry, cytokine profiling with Luminex, in addition to an exploratory yet sensitive emerging CyTOF technology, capable of recovering >100 functional phenotypes represented by distinct combinatorial diversity of immune cells include innate and adaptive immune markers.

    The fellow will be integrated into a dynamic training program at the Emory Vaccine Center and Yerkes National Primate Center centers on the human immunology, flow cytometry and mass cytometry (CyTOF) and various cutting-edge technologies.


    Applicants should be recent graduates of a Ph.D. degree in Immunology or a related discipline obtained within the past five years. Strong analytic, writing, speaking and presentation skills are also important.

    Important skills:

    • PhD in Immunology or related field.
    • Strong background in flow cytometry and Mass cytometry (CyTOF) is preferred.
    • Experience in Human Immunology is required.
    • Background or training in Immunology or HIV research
