    Located 36 miles east of Atlanta, Emory University's Oxford College invites applications for a full-time, lecturer-track Writing Center Director to begin August 2019.

     

    The Director will oversee the Oxford Writing Center, which supports Oxford’s campus culture of writing and the development of consultants and students as flexible, thoughtful writers. The Director will recruit, train, and supervise undergraduate Writing Consultants, as well as a small number of Writing Fellows attached to writing courses; teach a tutor-preparation course; develop and assess writing center goals and programming; and collaborate with related units. The Director will teach one First-Year Writing course per semester, with opportunities to teach and develop other writing and rhetoric courses in the candidate’s area of specialty, including a first-year Discovery Seminar. The Director will also work closely with the Director of the Writing Program to provide ongoing vision for the writing center. Oxford College’s Writing Program includes a First-Year Writing requirement, taught through the English Department, and a Continuing Writing requirement, fulfilled through courses in a number of disciplines. Oxford’s student population is approximately 18% international, many of whom are non-native English speakers, requiring that writing center consultants be prepared to support both non-native English speakers and native speakers.

    Qualifications:

    A Ph.D. in rhetoric and composition or a related field, in hand by the time of appointment.  Administrative experience in a writing or communication center and knowledge of current writing center theory and practice.  Demonstrated excellence in teaching academic writing, including experience supporting multilingual student writers.

    Preferred qualifications: Commitment to teaching and learning in a liberal arts curriculum. Experience teaching tutor-training practicum courses, supervising undergraduates, and mentoring undergraduate researchers; performing program assessment; experience supporting digital portfolios, multimodal composition, and/or digital writing. Familiarity with writing across the curriculum and writing in the disciplines. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in writing center work.
