JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
EGDRC and GCDTR have established partnerships with a global and US network of significant collaborators in diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) research. The Fellow will be involved in large and innovative observational and intervention studies of diabetes and CVD etiology, prevention, and treatment in the United States and South Asia (India and Pakistan). Fellows will work primarily with Drs. Venkat Narayan and Shivani Patel, and also have the opportunity to work with a number of faculty at EGDRC (e.g., Drs. Solveig Cunningham, Mohammed Ali, Mary Beth Weber, Lisa Staimez). Exciting scientific challenges and opportunities for career progression are available for motivated, high quality candidates.
Research activities will include working with national and international teams on rigorous statistical analyses of primary and secondary data from population-based cohort and surveillance studies and intervention trials in the United States, India, Pakistan, and elsewhere. Primary responsibilities include developing statistical analyses plans, harmonizing data across multiple databases, conducting state-of-the-art analyses, and developing peer-reviewed research publications to contribute to the social epidemiology of the US and global cardiometabolic disease burden. In addition, there will be opportunities for gaining experience in preparing study protocols, developing R01-level research proposals, designing data collection tools, and overseeing junior researchers.
We are seeking candidates with a doctoral degree in epidemiology, nutrition, behavioral sciences, demography, or related field with strong statistical analysis and programming skills. Substantive knowledge of diabetes, obesity, CVD, and the social determinants framework is a plus. Candidates must have the ability to work independently and collaboratively; strong organizational and record keeping skills; fluent English writing and verbal skills; and an enthusiasm for inter-disciplinary engagement.
