Description

Visiting Fellow, Virus-Host Interactions and Immunology

The Medina Lab, part of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the Emory Vaccine Center at Emory University School of Medicine, studies the molecular basis of disease, pathogenesis, and host immune responses during influenza, SARS-CoV-2, and other RNA virus infections. Combining in vitro and in vivo infection models with virology, immunology, multi-omics, and bioinformatics, the lab investigates viral zoonosis, immune evasion, and the host-pathogen interactions that determine resilience versus severe disease.

About the Position

We are seeking a Research Fellow to study virus-host interactions and immunology. Working closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and senior scientist in the team, the Fellow will perform research projects while receiving advanced mentorship designed to build the scientific skills and independence needed for a research career in this field.

Essential Functions

  • Design and carry out research projects independently to advance the lab’s research goals
  • Develop new protocols and test and evaluate a range of experimental approaches
  • Analyze and interpret data, and propose new ideas that extend current research directions
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals, under the direction of the PI
  • Manage projects, including training and supervising research staff and teaching laboratory techniques to others
  • Operate and maintain specialized laboratory equipment as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, molecular biology, immunology, genetics, or a related field
  • Excellent scientific writing and strong oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively and collegially with colleagues

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong background in one or more of the following: cell culture systems, flow cytometry assays, bioinformatics, or statistics
  • Solid understanding of virology and immunology
  • Prior experience in influenza virus research
