Dr. Angela Bengtson (https://sph.emory.edu/profile/faculty/angela-bengtson) within the Department of Epidemiology, Rollins School of Public Health (RSPH), Emory University is seeking a post-doctoral fellow in Epidemiology. The postdoctoral fellow will join a dynamic research group focused on improving health outcomes for women living with HIV and their children. The post-doc will support a range of studies based in South Africa, Malawi, and the US with a focus on comorbidities during the perinatal, postpartum, and pediatric periods.

 

Key responsibilities:
• Work closely with the Principal Investigator in all aspects of the research
• Conduct data analysis using quantitative epidemiological methods using SAS, Stata, or R
• Develop manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, as a co-author and first author
• Support or lead grant proposal development
• Present findings at scientific conferences
• Support project implementation, including overseeing data collection, recruitment, retention, regulatory issues, and data management activities

 

The post-doc will be expected to support data analysis and manuscript development for multiple NIH funded R01 studies focused on HIV exposed children in South Africa and improving perinatal depression among women with HIV in Malawi. The post-doc will also be expected to support project coordination for a study in South Africa to support healthy gestational weight gain for women with and without HIV. These activities are expected to result in multiple opportunities for leading or co-authoring scientific manuscripts, developing grant proposals, supporting project implantation, and presentation at scientific conferences.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated interest in pediatric or perinatal epidemiology and experience in HIV research, excellent quantitative and analytic skills, and experience with project coordination, including overseeing study recruitment, retention, regulatory, and data management activities. Candidates are required to commit at least one year to the position, with the opportunity to extend to a second year. Candidates with a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in academic research are strongly preferred, including those interested in developing a K award or other research grant proposals.

The fellow will be under the mentorship of Principal Investigator Dr. Angela Bengtson and will have the opportunity to collaborate with investigators at Emory in RSPH and Emory School of Medicine, as well as collaborators South Africa and Malawi. The fellow will be based at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, with a start date of Fall 2026. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with NIH standards.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION: 

  • Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career.
  • The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc.
  • Designs and evaluates experiments. 
  • Develops new ideas that promote current research.
  • Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
  • May be responsible for operation of specific equipment.
  • May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff.
  • Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee.
  • The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available.
  • Appointments cannot exceed five years. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field.
  • Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues.
  • Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in Epidemiology, Public Health, Behavioral Health (with excellent quantitative analytic skills) or other relevant quantitative field
  • Expertise in epidemiologic methods; experience in longitudinal data analysis, predictive modeling, or advanced epidemiology methods is preferred
  • Experience in HIV, global health, or pediatric/perinatal research
  • Excellent scientific writing ability with a demonstrated publication record
  • Experience in data management and analysis using SAS, R or other statistical software.
  • Experience with project coordination for HIV or global health projects, including overseeing study recruitment, retention, and data management
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster a good working relationship with others on the team and collaborators, including cross-culturally
  • Strong interest in a career in academic research
  • Ability to commit at least one year to the position, with a strong interest in two years.
