The Department of Russian and East Asian Languages and Cultures (REALC) at Emory University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Korean Studies, which was made possible through the generous support of the Korea Foundation, to begin in Fall 2027.
Research field and period are open for this position, and we invite applicants with backgrounds in the humanities and/or humanistic social sciences including, but not limited to, the fields of literature, gender studies, media and cultural studies, religion, history, anthropology, and sociology. The Department is particularly interested in candidates whose scholarship is inter-disciplinary and inter-regional (within East Asia and beyond) to complement a dynamic and multidisciplinary community of scholars within REALC specializing in Korea, China, Japan, and Russia.
Applicants must have a PhD in hand by the time of appointment. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research profile. This position carries a 2-2 teaching load, which will include both survey courses on Korea/East Asia and those informed by the candidate’s research expertise and department’s curricular needs. The candidate is also expected to fully engage in departmental activities and to actively contribute at both the college and university levels. Near native proficiency in both English and Korean is required.
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a letter of application detailing the track record of their research, one recent representative publication or work-in-progress (25 pages maximum), teaching portfolio (teaching statement that specifies mentoring and teaching plans, two sample syllabi [one lower-level undergraduate course and one upper-level undergraduate course informed by their research expertise], and course evaluations [if available]) and three letters of recommendation through https://apply.interfolio.com/193692. Inquiries about the position can be sent to Dr. Hwisang Cho (hwisang.cho@emory.edu), the Chair of the Search Committee.
Only candidates who are authorized or who can obtain the necessary visa to work in the USA by the start of appointment should apply.
Review of applications will start on November 15 and continue until the position is filled.
