Description

Qualifications: All candidates must possess the following credentials:
(1) Completion of an ACGME-accredited (or equivalent) cardiothoracic surgery residency program.
(2) Completion of all three USMLE or COMLEX examination steps.
(3) Board Certified or Board Eligible according to American Board of Thoracic Surgery requirements.
(4) A current (or eligibility for) full Georgia Medical License and DEA license.
(5) International candidates must hold a valid ECFMG certificate and hold a valid U.S. Visa (i.e., Green Card, H1B).
(6) Ability to function independently in the operating room, manage complex critical care situations with confidence, and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of advanced cardiothoracic surgery principles and practice.
Position Details: The goal of the fellowship is to provide specialized training in aortic and complex/high-risk adult cardiac surgery beyond cardiothoracic surgery residency training. The Aortic Fellow will work at the direction of the Emory Aortic Center Medical Director and function across the Emory University Hospital (primary site) and Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital campuses. . In addition, the fellow will obtain full privileges across the Emory System of Hospitals that perform cardiac surgery. Upon the completion of the fellowship, the candidate will be competent in performing aortic valve repair and contemporary open and endovascular therapy for patients with thoracic and abdominal aortic disease.
The Aortic Fellow will receive advanced training in and be responsible for the following knowledge areas and skills sets including, but not limited to:
(1) Serve as primary surgeon or surgical first assist on complex aortic procedures and high risk cardiac surgical procedures under the direction and supervision of the Director of Thoracic Aortic Surgery and other cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons;
(2) Spend dedicated, protected time learning endovascular skills for the treatment of thoracic aortic disease.
(3) Treatment of aortic disease (aneurysms and dissection) utilizing both open and endovascular techniques;
(4) Preoperative evaluation, operative management, and postoperative patient care of complex adult surgical conditions, including major thoracic aortic surgery and complex/high risk cardiac surgery. This will include protected time in clinic with the Director of Thoracic Aortic Surgery for Emory Healthcare;
(5) Train other cardiothoracic surgery residents and/or fellows on the diagnosis and treatment of complex aortic disease;
(6) Interpretation and assessment of diagnostic imaging studies;
(7) Participation in both emergent and elective aortic and adult cardiac procedures;
(8) Independent completion of critical portions of the complex aortic procedures (i.e. key anastomoses, performance of re-operative sternotomy);
(9) Independent completion of basic cardiac and aortic cases at the direction or under the supervision of the Director of Thoracic Aortic Surgery for Emory Healthcare and other cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons;
(10) Additional education and scholarly pursuits as determined by the Medical Director to support the mission of the Aortic Center.
(11) Sole responsibility for a bi-monthly Emory Healthcare Thoracic Aortic Surgical Conference, providing education to faculty, residents and fellows on the contemporary management of thoracic aortic disease.

 

NOTE: Position tasks are required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location; working remote is not an option. Emory reserves the right to change this status with notice to employee.
