Description

This position is based primarily at Grady Memorial Hospital, with additional clinical responsibilities at affiliated neighborhood health centers.  Faculty rank and compensation are commensurate with experience and qualifications.

 

The Department of Ophthalmology at Emory University School of Medicine is seeking a full‑time Instructor of Optometry to join its clinical faculty. This position provides comprehensive optometric care while supporting the Department’s academic, clinical, and service missions. Clinical practice will be based at Grady Memorial Hospital and affiliated neighborhood health centers, serving a diverse and medically complex patient population.

 

This is a non‑tenure track faculty appointment at the Instructor level.


Job Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive optometric care, including routine eye examinations, diagnosis and management of ocular disease, contact lens services, and vision care for adult and pediatric patients.
  • Deliver patient‑centered care in hospital‑based and community health center settings, with a focus on underserved populations.
  • Collaborate closely with ophthalmologists, residents, trainees, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure coordinated, high‑quality care.
  • Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation in compliance with institutional, hospital, and regulatory requirements.

Teaching & Educational Responsibilities

  • Teach and clinically supervise optometry residents, and other learners in outpatient and hospital‑based clinical settings.
  • Provide mentoring, evaluation, and constructive feedback to learners to support clinical and professional development.

Academic, Administrative & Service Responsibilities

  • Support the Optometry Service Director and Department leadership in achieving patient care, teaching, and service objectives.
  • Participate in departmental service activities, committees, and quality improvement initiatives, as appropriate.
  • Engage in scholarly or academic activities consistent with an Instructor‑level appointment, which may include educational initiatives, clinical innovation, or quality improvement projects.
  • Maintain required licensure, credentialing, and professional certifications necessary for clinical practice at Grady Memorial Hospital and affiliated sites.
  • Comply with Emory University policies, hospital bylaws, and accreditation standards.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an ACOE‑accredited optometry program.
  • Residency training or commensurate work experience in hospital-based or community setting
  • Eligibility for licensure to practice optometry in the State of Georgia.
  • Demonstrated commitment to high‑quality clinical care and patient‑centered practice.
  • Interest in teaching and working in an academic medical center.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in hospital‑based or community health center optometry practice.
  • Experience teaching or supervising optometry students or residents.
  • Demonstrated interest in serving medically underserved or vulnerable populations.

NOTE: Position tasks are required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location; working remote is not an option. Emory reserves the right to change this status with notice to employee.
