The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Emory University Department of Pediatrics invites interested applicants for the position of Aflac Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Clinician-Scientist. The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center provides a rich and collaborative environment for basic, clinical, and translational research and has a diverse faculty. The Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program is an integral component of the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center, and currently includes 9 faculty members, 4 of whom are primarily basic research-focused as well as 3 advance practice providers. Candidates will have a strong record of demonstrated training and clinical expertise caring for pediatric oncology patients, as well as further subspecialty training specifically focused on pediatric neuro-oncology. Demonstration of productivity and interest in translational or clinical science research is required, and additional training and interest in applied bioinformatics of “big data” in pediatric neuro-oncology is preferred. The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center has close affiliations with research investigators within the Winship Cancer Institute, Emory University, and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a willingness to collaborate across departmental or center boundaries is essential.

 

About the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center

The successful candidate will join one of the strongest pediatric hematology/oncology and neuro-oncology programs in the country.

• In 2023, the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center was ranked No. 8 in the nation for Pediatric Cancer by US News and World Report
• More than 9,000 children with cancer and blood disorders are treated annually at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center
• An average of 150 new neuro-oncology patients are seen each year, making the Aflac Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program a top 3 center in the US by patient volume
• The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center has 125 faculty members and approximately 50 Advance Practice Providers (APPs) conducting basic, translational, and clinical research related to pediatric oncology and hematology disorders, with expertise in leukemias, lymphomas, brain tumors, neuroblastoma, sarcomas, rare tumors, renal tumors, CAR T-cell therapies, hemoglobinopathies and hemophilia.
• In 2022, Aflac faculty generated over $27M in extramural funding, including more than$12M from the NIH
• The Aflac fellowship program accepts 6 fellows each year for intensive clinical and research training in pediatric hematology/oncology and offers 1-2 year further subspecialty training fellowships in pediatric neuro-oncology.
• The Aflac Developmental Therapeutics Program offers a wide portfolio of clinical trials from cooperative groups, industry partners, and investigator-initiated studies, and has a larger referral base in the southeastern United States. Aflac is a member of the COG Pediatric Early Phase Clinical Trials Network (PEP-CTN), PBTC, DOD NF, and CONNECT clinical trials consortia focused on innovative investigative clinical trials for children with CNS tumors, as well as participating in PNOC-sponsored trials.

This position will devote majority of effort to translational and/or clinical science research with remainder of effort focused on inpatient/outpatient clinical responsibilities in pediatric neuro-oncology and solid tumor patient care in the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. The applicant is expected to:

• Provide exemplary clinical service and assure that patients cared for by you receive only the highest quality care.
•  Devote 20-30% to clinical responsibilities, with the remaining effort, depending upon research interests and funding, dedicated to pediatric neuro-oncology clinical and translational research, with a focus on bioinformatics, preferred
• Provide clinical coverage at all locations that the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta serves, which includes Arthur M. Blank Hospital and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite.
• In collaboration with program leaders, contribute to and expand the clinical program and patient services in pediatric neuro-oncology, solid tumors, as well as general pediatric hematology/oncology.
• Based on experience and interests, research, educational, and leadership role opportunities within the Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program may exist.
• Play a role in the education and training program of the pediatric hematology/oncology and neuro-oncology fields, including access to and involvement with medical students, residents, fellows, and physicians in practice.
• We anticipate this time may include both inpatient and outpatient responsibilities, including call and will be adjusted depending on service needs

Successful candidates will have:

• MD, MD/PhD, or DO degrees
• Must be Board Certified in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology
• Must have additional training in pediatric neuro-oncology and neuro-oncology research
• Must be currently licensed as a physician and eligible for licensure as a physician in the State of Georgia
• A history of clinical excellence/achievement
• Training and interest in bioinformatics applied to pediatric oncology/neuro-oncology

Salary and rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor at Emory University School of Medicine will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments. The primary focus of this position will be an emphasis on translational research, clinical service and administrative duties.
