Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (Children’s) and Emory University School of Medicine (Emory) are seeking a fellowship trained pediatric abdominal transplant surgeon with strong clinical and academic foundation to join the Division of Pediatric Abdominal Transplant Surgery. Children’s has of one of the largest and most diverse abdominal pediatric transplant programs in the country, focusing on kidney, liver and dual organ transplantation. 

The ideal candidate will partner with the Division Chief of Abdominal Transplant Surgery, Transplant Medical Director Leadership and Emory’s Adult Transplant Center surgeons to continue our journey of being a nationally recognized pediatric liver and kidney transplant programs. The candidate will be able to leverage the unique resources and capabilities of the free-standing children’s hospital and affiliation with the Emory University academic medical center to maintain a high-volume center with excellent quality outcomes.  Candidates will be considered based on their experience and long-term career interests.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical

• Serve as a liver and kidney transplant surgeon for the Division of Transplant Surgery within the Department of Surgery with an active inpatient and outpatient practice, with associated call coverage.
• Partner with Division Chief to ensure that the ongoing clinical operations of the liver and kidney transplant program abide by the UNOS bylaws and CMS regulations.
• Ensure that the Department is responsive to the needs of those it serves clinically (patients, families, referring physicians, other Departments, etc
• On daily Liver & Kidney Transplant Multidisciplinary rounds, improve surgical participation in expected discharge date planning (EDD).

• Develops strong, supportive, and collaborative relationships with referring physicians.

Administrative

• Participate in committees, patient selection conference, peer review, M&M case conferences.
• Manage patient workups and procedures according to department guidelines.
• Adopt any tools and/or technologies deemed part of the practice of abdominal transplant.
• Collaborate with the Surgical and Medical leadership to further development of the liver and kidney transplant programs.

Quality & Research

• Participates in quality improvement, safety, and patient satisfaction initiatives.
• Understands and is works in compliance with UNOS/OPTN transplant regulations.
• Participate in clinical research within the Division as well as efforts to secure extramural funding.
• Ensures responsible and compliant conduct of research.
• Supports and promotes a research environment that involves trainees (including students, residents, fellows, advanced practice professionals) and attendings
• Have particular efforts focused in the areas of interest clinical or scientific research or quality improvement.
• Participates in national transplant meetings

Teaching/Education

• Participate in the education and mentorship of medical students, residents and fellows and other rotators through the transplant surgery service.
• Participate in developing an effective rounding program incorporating bedside RNs when seeing patients

Minimum Qualifications:

• Board certified in Pediatric Surgery and/or General Surgery
• Eligible for OPTN certification as a pediatric abdominal transplant surgeon.
• Competence in deceased and living donor liver transplantation, deceased and living donor kidney transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery, and pediatric general surgery as required.
• A valid, unrestricted medical license to practice medicine in the State of Georgia
• A controlled Substance Registration Drug Enforcement Administration Certificate
