The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering, a joint department between Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering and Emory University’s School of Medicine (Atlanta, GA), invites applications for tenure track faculty at the assistant or associate professor levels.

We are currently soliciting applications for faculty with innovative research related to sensorimotor systems and movement, at the intersection of biomedical engineering, basic science, and/or clinical research. The faculty member will have a primary appointment in Biomedical Engineering through the Emory University School of Medicine and will ideally have a secondary appointment in a clinical department appropriate to their scholarship. Like other BME department faculty at Emory, the successful candidate, whether focused on clinical research, animal models, or theoretical approaches, is expected to apply their discoveries toward clinical translation through collaboration with other clinical departments. We welcome the application of research in sensorimotor systems and movement to a diverse range of clinical areas, including but not limited to mobility challenges associated with neurological or orthopedic impairments, aging, cognitive or psychiatric disorders, or cancer, cardiovascular disease, etc.

Preferred areas of applicant research may include, but are not limited to, any of the following as applied to sensorimotor systems, movement science, or rehabilitation:

  • biomechanics of movement (e.g., muscle, skeletal, soft tissue)
  • neurophysiology or neuroimaging
  • instrumentation and analyses of movement
  • devices, interventions, and/or therapeutics
  • computational approaches
  • motor or sensorimotor interactions with other systems (e.g., cognitive, emotional, autonomic)

The successful candidate will interact with robust research communities in Atlanta focused on sensorimotor control neuroscience, and mobility. Examples include the Georgia Tech/Emory Neural Engineering Center. with faculty spanning various basic science and engineering departments across Emory and Georgia Tech, as well as clinical departments such as the Department of Rehabilitation, Division of Physical Therapy, Neurology and the Emory Brain Health Center. Emory University recently established the Center for Movement Science and Physical Therapy, reflecting a robust community of researchers at Emory and across Atlanta (including Georgia Tech, the Atlanta VA, and the Shepherd Center) addressing various aspects of human mobility, from basic science to engineering approaches, and including rehabilitative and therapeutic interventions.

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent) in engineering, medicine, natural sciences, applied mathematics, or computer science, or related fields. Successful candidates will be expected to develop a vibrant externally-funded research program in adherence with Emory School of Medicine guidelines for faculty promotion, and to participate in teaching and advising of trainees, particularly PhD students and postdocs.  Please include: (1) a cover letter describing how your research will be applied to address important fundamental science, engineering, and or clinical gaps and how it will synergize with other research activities within the Department (https://www.bme.gatech.edu/bme/research) and across the School of Medicine; (2) a statement of research interests, not to exceed 4 pages and focusing on the impact of the candidate’s proposed research, the underlying questions, and the approach(es) to be taken; (3) a statement of teaching interests and philosophy, including approaches to creating an inclusive environment in the laboratory and classroom, not to exceed 1 page; (4) a complete curriculum vitae; and (5) names and complete contact information of at least three professional references.  For inquiries, please contact Dr. Lena Ting (nec@emory.edu) with a subject title of “Emory BME Faculty Search”.
