The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Emory University Department of Pediatrics are seeking an academic Clinical Pediatric Psychologist to join our established Supportive Care Clinic.

 

This embedded, interdisciplinary, consultative clinic, in existence since 2017, is currently led by a dual trained oncologist-palliative care physician and an experienced nurse practitioner. Over 60% of visits to Supportive Care involve mental health concerns, predominately around adjusting to a diagnosis of cancer, along with the adverse effects of treatment related side effects and the demands of treatment. Many patients have progressive disease and they and their families require special attention to pain, existential and psychological distress, advance care planning and end-of-life preparations. The clinic aims to provide medical guidance, pharmacotherapy, individual psychotherapy, family psychotherapy, and hospice coordination/ case management for patients who are referred by their oncology teams.

 

The pediatric psychologist within this clinic will take part in interdisciplinary outpatient visits with medical providers, provide psychological assessments and interventions focused on developing skills and behaviors to help cope with illness, uncertainty, and anticipatory grief. Supportive Care providers work closely with patients and families during their treatment course, following patients until survivorship or end-of-life and into family bereavement. All treatment would focus on continuity of care for a low volume of high-need families.

 

The psychologist would work closely with palliative care providers, oncology teams, psychiatry, the Supportive Care behavioral and mental health (BMH) therapist (LCSW), and practice operations coordinator to develop and implement a comprehensive treatment plan for each patient.

 

This academically-appointed psychologist will train and supervise BMH providers. This position will also involve program development with the ability to customize based on patient and family needs and academic interests. Appointments will be in-person and via telehealth, and may occur in clinic or less frequently the inpatient setting.

 

Specific clinical training & skills related to the assessment and intervention of psychosocial needs associated with medical illness are necessary.

 

Candidates with a strong background in CBT, Pain Psychology, Dignity Therapy, Grief Counseling, and an interest in working with children with life-limiting cancer preferred.
