JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
A 2-3 year post-doctoral position is immediately available in the lab of Dr. Yana Bromberg, in the departments of Biology and Computer Science, Emory University, Atlanta. The Bromberg lab is purely computational, studying interactions between the host and the microbiome in light of health and disease. We are seeking a highly motivated scholar to continue training in an exciting research laboratory with a focus on exploring molecular functionality encoded in metagenome data. Specifically for this project, we will develop deep learning techniques to explore whether the host-associated microbiomes predict oral herpes virus persistence. Our unique, large, experimental cohort used for this study consists of age- and sex-matched HPV infected children born to HIV-infected and healthy mothers in Nigeria. This work will be carried out in collaboration with Dr. Modupe Coker’s lab at Rutgers University.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or related fields. Candidates with non-bioinformatics degrees but possessing the necessary computational skill-sets are welcome to apply. Programming skills are essential, as well as some familiarity with the major bioinformatics tools/databases. Experience with machine learning, high performance computing, and whole genome and metagenome analysis is highly desired, but not required.
Candidates should be fluent in spoken and written English and should be able to communicate their ideas well. The ability to integrate into a team is as essential as that to complete a project without constant supervision.
