The Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing (NHWSN) of Emory University is seeking to recruit multiple, open-rank tenure-track or research track faculty (assistant, associate, or full professor) with expertise in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and either experience or interest in its application to nursing and health sciences more generally. We seek to identify mid-career and senior researchers who can harness AI to improve health and health equity while training students who will lead the AI workforce of the future.

The incumbent(s) will join a vibrant community of interdisciplinary scholars working in the school’s Center for Data Science. A team of statisticians, applied mathematicians, biomedical engineers, computer scientists, informaticians, and nurse scientists work together on multiple projects with the shared goal of improving health and health equity for patients and communities.

Emory is making a major commitment to Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the goal of creating a vibrant and coherent research and teaching community that represents the diverse interests of Emory’s schools and units and expand offerings to undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students. As part of this “AI-Humanity Initiative” supported by the Office of the Provost at Emory University, NHWSN is committed to enabling its rich interdisciplinary research ecosystem for the creation and application of cutting-edge AI methods to nursing research. We interpret AI broadly – but not limited to – machine learning, signal processing, image analysis and computer vision, natural language processing, causal inference, and statistical and mathematical modeling of various health data modalities (electronic health records, images, physiological data, and omics data). Some of the areas for applications of AI to health science and nursing research include the following: disease and symptom prevention, prediction, diagnosis, and prognosis; nursing workflow optimization and quality indicators; approaches to dampen the influences of social determinants of health and improve health equity and healthcare delivery; complex systems and biological modeling to optimize discovery; decision-making for policy and practice; use of technology to bridge the gaps between  healthcare providers, patients, and communities;  and learning analytics to improve student outcomes.

The ideal candidate should have a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline with a strong record of AI academic research, a demonstrated capacity to publish and secure external funding, and either have prior experience or be interested in the application of AI to nursing-related domains. Investigators with a track record of commercial applications and/or patents are especially encouraged to apply. The incumbent should have ability to be a team player in interdisciplinary research while developing a distinctive area of research. Multiple opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration exist across the Woodruff Health Sciences Center (WHSC) and other divisions of Emory University. Cross-appointments within the other two WHSC schools (School of Medicine, Rollins School of Public Health) and/or any of the other Emory Schools (Arts & Sciences, Business, Law, Theology) will be encouraged.
