Clinical-Track Position

The Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing is committed to attracting diverse world-class faculty to advance the School’s mission to educate visionary nurse leaders and scholars, generate and apply knowledge, and transform nursing, health, and systems of health care within the local and global community. We are seeking applications for tenured, tenure-track, and clinical positions.


The Carter Center’s Mental Health Program uses the Carter Center's convening power to bring together health leaders and organizations to discuss important public policy issues facing mental health and substance use care systems nationwide and at the state level. In addition, the Mental Health Program is part of an international effort to reduce stigma and discrimination against people living with mental health and substance use conditions. The Center works with key partners at the government and community levels to help build sustainable mental health care infrastructure in post-conflict Liberia.


The jointly appointed faculty member will have a primary appointment as an Assistant or Associate Professor (CT) as a 12-month faculty member within the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing and a secondary appointment  in the Carter Center  (TCC) Mental Health Program (MHP). TCC MHP will participate in the selection of the faculty member for this joint appointment. The faculty member’s salary and fringe will be allocated based on their joint appointment effort.


The faculty to be appointed will devote 40% effort to teaching and 10% effort to scholarship and service within the NHWSN and 50% effort providing nurse education expertise within TCC) Mental Health Program to:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate psychiatric mental health nursing and/or other courses based on expertise and teaching needs through face-to-face and online


  • Engage in mentoring students; and contributing to scholarly activity in the field through research, presentations, and publications.
  • Provide nurse education expertise to TCC MHP global behavioral health workforce development activities, including;
    • curriculum development for post-baccalaureate/licensure mental health nursing certification in low and middle-income countries (LMIC) in collaboration with in-country nursing authorities,
    • assist in building working relationships and provide technical assistance with nursing schools (and sometimes physician assistant schools as determined appropriate) in LMIC to embed psych mental health content in pre and postbaccalaureate/ licensure programs,
    • develop strategies for developing advanced practice nurse programs, and
    • assist in the identification and engagement of nursing education experts globally that will assist in scaling psych mental health nursing in LMIC
  • Coordinate use of Project ECHO (on-line learning and supervision platform provided by University of New Mexico Health Science) activities with TCC use of Project ECHO to build a psych mental health community of practice in Africa
  • Lead implementation research design/ monitoring and evaluation activities of TCC

global behavioral health workforce development, mental health advocacy, and antidiscrimination activities, and informing of global mental health policy work.

  • Lead and develop manuscripts on the work of the TCC Mental Health Program.


The faculty to be appointed will be expected to offer evidence of continuing achievement of high-quality teaching through multiple assessment measures such as:

  • Receiving favorable reviews on teaching/course evaluations which should be

administered in every course;

  • Providing exemplars of one or more assessments of student learning around

psych mental health,

  • Receive favorable reviews on responsibility for global nurse curriculum

development and teaching


Each academic year, the School of Nursing will communicate with the faculty member to determine the faculty member’s teaching and advising responsibilities in accordance with the department, program.



Appointments may be made at the ranks of Assistant or Associate Professor, commensurate with experience. Candidates for consideration as Associate Professor should have an excellent record of practice/teaching/scholarship as demonstrated by history of sustained grant funding and/or demonstrated excellence in teaching. Candidates who are nurses must hold or be eligible for licensure in the State of Georgia.
